It was around 845 last night I was taking a walk with my friend. we were looking and the sky and saw a very bright light, assumed it to be a planet. We got back to our apartments and looked at the “star” again. as soon as we commented how bright it was it faded away. it then dimmed back on. it was so bright, too bright to be a planet we thought, it was white light like a star/plane light. we decided to sit down and watch it. it appeared to stay stationary but we were not observing close enough to see if it was moving. we later thought it would have moved lower in the night sky if it was moving (slowly!) finally after about 15 minutes if faded away again! we sat for about 5 more minutes but it never came back.

i enjoyed watching it! I’m curious to what it is.

  • wtf:

i saw too a bright white light fading out and reappearing.. south europe 21 june 2010, the light appeared west, north-west above a local mountain. i am sure it was not a ufo, but i cant really say what it was.. at first i thought it was a satelite reflecting the sun light but it am not sure… it was moving very slowly and after a few minute was set like a normal star..

    wtf!!???

  • wtf:

there is a chance that it was a military flare bomb, from nearby military facilities on local mountain… i cant say for sure

  • Kaitlyn:

I just saw it too! It’s always in the same spot, it’s really bright. I always watch it. Just now, it kept fading colour in and out and it slowly dropped down so I couldn’t see it anymore. Then it came back slowly and then disappeared again. I’m not sure what it is, but it’s odd cause it has again, been in the same spot for the past few weeks. It’s just odd how it now decided to fade away?

  • nayt:

Yeah I am experiencing the same thing where I live on the west coast of the US and it is starting to freak me out. I sit there outsides for a good two hours watching this bright star/planet disappear and reappear over and over again. What is it and why is it doing that?!

my husband and i have seen the same thing.it appeared around 8pm over the tree tops and then faded out for a few seconds and then brightened back up just a little further to the right then it faded out again and reappeared and stayed bright . the funny thing is ,we also seen like a moving bright star headed the same direction where the first one was,but it had faded out as it was moving toward the other star.

  • Matt:

My wife and I noticed a bright light high in sky to sw from Tampa FL. With binos it looked like 3 lights. Then it was gone?

  • Roderick:

This is really interesting to find so many people who have recently experienced nearly the exact same thing as I have. Me and my friend stepped out the door, I looked up in the sky to see what I assumed was either venus or mars, it appeared to be stationary. I was about to remark on how unusually bright it was [truly it was much too bright,] when it started to fade rapidly and disappear completely. As “curious” remarked I almost immediately saw what appeared to be a satellite reflecting the suns light in the night sky, [The time was 8:30pm~] which headed directly towards the area where the phenomenon had disappeared. The bright light has yet to reappear but I will be watching for it and will closely observe its behaviour if I catch it.

  • Roderick:

I live in western Canada, the light was to the north. If not, north west

  • jack:

eastern Canada \ western Newfoundland !
October 12th around 12pm had the same experience last night.
sky was full of normal stars. i closed my eyes to go to sleep, opened them a few minuted later to get up and had no choice but to notice the light in the sky amongst the other normal stars.
it faded out once after about a minute ot two. i could still faintly see the object, then it came back to full light\brightness… moved downwards then faded out agian and never returned . i waited for about an hour.
was seen south west of where i’m located in western nl.

  • jenn:

I couldn’t sleep, so was laying on the couch staring out the window and admiring the super bright “star” in the sky. it kept fading in and out. dull to bright and again. its been gone now for 5 minutes and I got up and googled “bright star in western sky that fades in and out” and got this website. it would be in the western sky from Missouri, maybe lightly southish but i’ve never been good at direction. any ideas?

  • JB:

Yah I see same thing as posted here every night I look for it out my window and am up most nights playing poker. V bright looking light that usually moves left to right across the sky during the night and fades in and out sometimes glowing v bright and often fading completely. Tonight seemed like more then usual activity in different spots then usual and in vertical lines up and down the sky from my narrow vantage point. So finally googled it and came up with this. Also have seen full blown UFO zooming around sky/fading in and out and growing massive and fading completely about 4 years ago. Haven’t seen anything quite like that since but seen alot of lights as described. Am from West coast B.C, shout outs =D

Houston, TX 10:30 p.m. Sitting outside watching the sky. Clouds were drifitng north then notice a bright light hovering over clouds. Thought it was a star then noticed light is moving north with clouds. Watched light drift for about 1 minute then fade and disappear. Third time I’ve seen these light in 9 months.

  • Matt:

I saw the exact same thing when I was in pemberton, BC, Canada. Bright orangy white light moving across the sky and then it disappeared. Saw it moving slowly for about 2 minutes, then gone! Does anyone know what it is?

  • tee:

long island around 415am between Cassiopeia and the moon. higher in the sky than the plane that the planets orbit on as seen from earth. moving faster than the constellations. disappeared and reappeared. ew =[ why?

  • tee:

    northeast!

  • saw something:

I saw a white round flash which was bigger than the other stars but smaller than the moon, but after i blinked it was gone again.

  • Alan:

I saw it in a party in Mexico, this is really strange, we were all freak out when it faded out! people screaming! :(

  • SA:

Thursday December 15th, Ontario Canada. I saw this exact phenomenon two nights ago. A friend and I went out to have a smoke and admire the clear night we had in Ontario. For December it has been very warm lately. Anyways we got attracted to this very bright star which we thought was the north star, though it clearly wasn’t based on it’s location and we were convinced it wasn’t a star when it started moving. And the way it moved was strange because it didn’t move much, just to the right a bit and then dropped a cm or so in the sky, barely enough to be noticable, but it appeared to be hovering. So we got talking and we thought it was a mini helicopter drone of some sort. The light was bright enough to appear as a spot light, but it looked so small to be an aircraft and it was also hovering above a highway. But the strangest thing happened afterwards, it dimmed twice and then went dark for about 5 seconds. Then it came back and shone very bright. It looked almost as if it was even getting closer. We went back in the house to grab our two other friends to come out and see what we just saw and when we came back out the star had dimmed back to look as still and normal as a distant star. We watched it for about 15 minutes after and it didn’t move at all.

  • open minded:

Mid August, 2006 was camping when a blindingly bright white light appeared over campsite (~1am.). It travelled from behind me to in front of me and beyond, lighting up the ground below it as it moved. Lasted about 30 seconds. It was absolutly silent, the sky was clear…a perfect summer night. Strange thing is, two of us wittnessed it but, for some reason, never commented on it during or after the event. It was several years later before I gave it any thought. Now, I try to make sense of it often. Has anyone else experienced such a benign reaction?

  • open minded:

Above mentioned event took place on west coast of Newfoundland (Port au Port Peninsula), which is located on east coast of Canada.

  • Luke:

Hey I’ve been looking at this for about a week now, definitely the same object, bout west northwest in sky (from south england) seems to not move just the rotation of earth that is affecting its position, at first I thought it was high altitude clouds but it doesn’t just disappear an reappear suddenly it fades. Baffled as to what this phenomenon is, can’t find anything on the Internet to suggest what it is. If anyone else can find out please post :)

  • Twice now:

Tonight was the second time I have seem this. Same situation and similiar place as last time, which was 3 weeks ago. What I think is a really bright star seems to burn really bright with points of light coming off it unlike any other star in the sky, then fades in and out for a few minutes then dissapears completely. How are there so many people reporting the same thing and no answers? Very interesting…
