Brazil’s Ministry of Defense invited members of the Brazilian Committee of UFO Researchers (CBU) to a formal meeting with members of the Brazilian armed forces. The meeting was held April 18 at the Ministry of Defense headquarters, and was attended by representatives from the Brazilian Air Force, Navy and Army.
The discussion centered on access to military documents regarding UFO investigations. Although the Brazilian government has released over 4500 documents, some of the files regarding the more famous cases have yet to be declassified.
According an article by the Brazilian Ministry of Defense, A. J. Gevaerd, Brazilian UFO Magazine’s editor, told the military representatives, “Many questions remained unsolved about famous incidents such as the Varginha Case, the Mearim corvette incident and the Trindade Island sightings.”
The Secretary for the Ministry’s Institutional Coordination and Organization, Ari Matos, reassured the group that the documents are going through the proper procedures for release and will be released in accordance to Brazil’s Access to Information Act (LAI).

The meeting lasted about 75 minutes, and everyone seemed satisfied with the results. Matos told reporters, “LAI has opened to the general public the possibility of accessing a great deal of information produced by the government. A regular means of contact must be created to suit the needs of both the UFO researchers and society in general.”
Gevaerd wrote, “For the first time in history a Ministry of Defense of a country has officially invited UFO researchers to discuss the UFO Phenomena, how to handle its investigation and the information it may come from it.”
Gevaerd was not the only Ufologist present who was satisfied with the results. “Today is a Day to remember in the history of Ufology,” said Fernando Aragão Ramalho, from UFO Magazine. “Never before did a country’s Ministry of Defense summon Ufologists to a formal discussion about flying saucers. We are optimistically standing at the door that has been opened to us, and we expect to move forward with our discussions,”
The meeting was the result of a petition created during a Brazilian UFO conference held last December, and sponsored by the Brazilian UFO Magazine. Among other points, the petition asked that the Brazilian government take UFO sightings seriously and that they declassify all of their files regarding UFO investigations. The petition was signed by the 30 speakers at the conference, who represented 15 different countries, and the over 600 attendees.

According to a former British government official, the existence of extraterrestrial life will be confirmed in 2024.
Former British Ministry of Defence UFO investigator Nick Pope recently told the Daily Express newspaper, “I will be controversial and give you an exact year of when I believe first confirmation of contact will be made – and that is 2024.”

Controversial indeed. Making predictions about major events, like the end of the world or meeting aliens, seems popular. Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a professor and astrophysicist at the University of Oxford, announced in July 2012, “I do suspect we are going to get signs of life elsewhere, maybe even intelligent life, within the next century.” Likewise, Lord Martin Rees, former president of the Royal Society, stated in September 2012 that he believes extraterrestrial life could be found within forty years. But Pope goes further by stating a specific year.
Although pinpointing the exact year extraterrestrial contact will take place seems hasty, Pope does have a basis for his bold prediction—The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) telescope. The Daily Express explains that the array will be “made up of thousands of radio wave receptors covering 1,900 square miles of the Earth’s surface in the Australian outback.” This radio telescope array will be the world’s largest and most sensitive radio telescope, reportedly fifty times more sensitive, and will scan the sky ten-thousand times faster than any other telescope.
So how does the SKA array fit into Pope’s prediction?
Construction is set to begin in 2016, and the array is scheduled to go online in 2024. Pope’s prediction of 2024 as the year the existence of extraterrestrial life will be confirmed seems contingent on the operation of the SKA array. He explains to the Daily Express, “If there is a civilisation within 100 lightyears this telescope could find it. We are now beginning to have the technology whether it’s the SKA or maybe other telescopes that are being developed that will allow these possibilities.”
Although the SKA array will be an incredible tool aiding the search for extraterrestrial life, it is possible, and perhaps likely, that extraterrestrial life will be detected prior to the completion of the array. Current tools like NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity could detect extraterrestrial life in the very near future. Additionally, with surging developments in the private space industry, and plans for multiple manned missions to the Moon and to Mars within the next ten years, the odds of finding extraterrestrial life before 2024 are good.
