Various mainstream newspapers etc are faffing about with stories based on the Wikileaks published US Diplomatic Cables obtained, seemingly, from the trusted insider “whistleblower” Bradley Manning, a low level US Army intelligence analyst, with day to day access to SIPRnet, the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, a US Military and Intelligence intranet.
Gary McKinnon was, back over 8 years ago, no doubt trying to get through to this network, which should have “air gaps” between it and the NIPREnet, the “non-classified” intranet, which at the time, had insufficient firewalls to protect it from the public internet.

– Gary McKinnon Extradition Case – The PM will likely raise with the Secretary (as he has with the Ambassador) the extradition case of Gary McKinnon. McKinnon is a 43-year old computer hacker with Asperger’s Syndrome who is wanted for prosecution in the U.S.; he is accused of hacking into U.S. government systems in 2001 and 2002. McKinnon has gained enormous popular sympathy in his appeal against extradition; the UK’s final decision is pending. The case has also caused public criticism of the U.S.-UK extradition treaty. In August, PM Brown, in a one-on-one meeting with the Ambassador, proposed a deal: that McKinnon plead guilty, make a statement of contrition, but serve any sentence of incarceration in the UK. Brown cited deep public concern that McKinnon, with his medical condition, would commit suicide or suffer injury in imprisoned in a U.S. facility. The Ambassador has raised this proposal with AG Holder and would be happy to brief the Secretary in more detail.

The (S/NF) designation of that part of the Diplomatic Cable from the US Embassy means “Secret / Not for Foreigners”
There is absolutely nothing in that paragraph which deserves a “Secret” classification, based as it is on public concerns.

The US sought extradition in 2003 after catching McKinnon hacking into government computers in 2001. The UK government began reviewing its extradition law back in September, following a large number of complaints from its citizens. While extraditions will not be frozen while the committee reviews the law, McKinnon’s extradition has been on hold since May, when Teresa May, Home Secretary, agreed to consider the possibility that, because McKinnon suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, his poor mental health may be sufficient to prevent his extradition to the US.
The committee meets on Tuesday to review the current Extradition Act.

UFO hacker Gary McKinnon’s fate may finally be decided in the coming weeks, rather than months. That is according to comments made by British Prime Minister David Cameron during an interview this week with ITV News in England.
Earlier this year, McKinnon’s extradition to the U.S. seemed inevitable, until Home Secretary Teresa May placed a hold on his extradition.
McKinnon was arrested seven years ago for breaking into several U.S. military computer systems in his search for information relating to UFOs.
