This is footage from 1965 of a zero-lift balloon being launched from Experimental Trials Vessel ICEWHALE, during MRE Porton Down’s series of Biological Warfare research field trials now known as ‘The Lyme Bay Trials’. During each field trial a series of zero-lift balloons were launched. These were tracked both visually and by radar to give scientists onshore an idea of the track of the massive bacterial clouds being emitted from ETV ICEWHALE. This information would assist Porton to place their mobile sampling teams in the path of the cloud as it passed over the southern England countryside. At night, the zero-lift balloons were illuminated by a small bicycle torch. Given the amount of neutral buoyancy balloons which were released for each trial, it is highly likely that they contributed to the numerous UFO sightings made in Dorset during the sixties.
