Hi all,

One intriguing file in the National Archives of Australia (NAA) is file series A663, control symbol O24/1/208 titled “Flying Saucers – Request by  P B Hubbard – Daily News Chicago correspondent for information.” The barcode is 3032137 with a date range of 1941 to 1941. Obviously, the intriguing thing about this file is the 1941 date, six years before the birth of the modern UAP.

Courtesy of Melbourne researcher Paul Dean the date range mystery for this file has been solved via a digital copy of the file.

The file is eight pages long and was an unclassified Department of Defence file with a main title of “Flying Saucers” and a sub-title of “Request by alt P B Hubbard Daily News. Chicago correspondent for information.”

The file opens with a letter dated 13 Aug 1952 from one Mr Fred B Hubbard who signs himself as “Daily News Correspondent” living in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Hubbard addressed his letter to “The Hon Philip A McBride, Minister for Defence.”

The letter stated that the Chicago Daily News is “…preparing for 66 U.S. and Canadian daily newspapers what is intended to be the most comprehensive examination yet made of the “flying saucer” situation. It goes on to pose the following questions:

“1. Has Australia developed any missiles which have provided a basis for “flying saucer” reports?

2. Is there any evidence in your possession tending to prove or disprove the existence of “saucers” as mysterious aircraft or missiles?

3. Is the Defense Department concerned over the mysterious phenomena Australians have reported seeing in the skies?

4. Is the Department making any investigation into these reports? If so, has the investigation provided any conclusive proof of the existence or non-existence of “flying saucers?”

5. Is there any scientific basis for any concern over these phenomena?”

The Secretary, Department of Defence prepared a draft reply for the Minister’s signature after “The question was discussed initially with Professor Martin, Defence Scientific Adviser.”

The Minister’s reply dated 3 Sep 1952 was as follows:

“With reference to your letter of 13th August 1952, on the subject of “flying saucers,” I have made enquiries into this matter and find that my Department has not received any reports of “flying saucers” in Australia which were considered to warrant further investigation.”

There is no explanation for why the NAA’s RecordSearch shows a date range of 1941 to 1941 when the documents clearly are dated in 1952,

Hi all,

UK researcher Isaac Koi has worked in recent months to create PDF versions of digitised UAP files in the National Archives of Australia (NAA.)

Today, http://www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread942661/pg1 Isaac announced that anyone can now download his collection of these files, after he received permission from the NAA to upload them to his online site. Also included in the download is a table which provides some details of the relevant files.

To download the entire collection go to:

https://www.wetransfer.com/downloads/bd6c6d90d4a6a161aacbf5fad14b134220130423090520/e32cc5155e188ee981df336c2cbc143f20130423090520/f28051

The collection may also be viewed at:

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=55caf0fca1c31c69&id=55CAF0FCA1C31C69%21356

Isaac’a suggestion is:

“In short, use the Wetransfer link above if you want the entire collection and it is before 6 May 2013. Use the Skydrive link above if you only want a single file or it is after 6 May 2013. “

In addition, Isaac has placed a copy of a 121 page guide to the files, prepared by myself, on behalf of the Disclosure Australia Project (2003-2008.) This can be found at:

https://www.box.com/s/47pd77p7qxluqq3hwf8u

Isaac is to congratulated on this initiative, which will allow more people to directly access these Australian UAP files.

Hi all,

As mentioned in a previous post, Melbourne researcher Paul Dean, has been digging deeper into the National Archives of Australia (NAA) looking for additional files on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP.)

Previous searches of the NAA’s electronic database RecordSearch, have used such keywords as “Unidentified Flying Objects;” “Unusual Aerial Sightings;” and “Flying Saucers.” Dozens of UAP files were located, and the Disclosure Australia Project (2003-2008) documented these files.

Paul has tried different keywords, including “anomaly;” “phenomena;” “occurrence reports;” “flashing lights;” “abnormal occurrences;” and, thinking about close encounter cases involving aircraft, “air incident reports.” Large numbers of new files have turned up. Only by examining these files will anyone be able to determine if their contents relate to UAP.

Dead ends:

Searching for UAP material in the NAA sometimes leads to dead ends. Paul has an example of this with the file series A703 control symbol 564/7/43 titled “Air Defence – Unusual reporting by aircraft captains Intelligence sightings.” One would think that this would possibly contain UAP reports amongst other more mundane foreign aircraft sightings. Paul asked for a copy of  this file. The NAA responded:

“We have written to the relevant agency requesting that this record be transferred to our custody in response to your application for access…” However, the next NAA communication read, in part, “The controlling agency for this record have informed us that it was destroyed in July 1998 under General Disposal Authority 14…”

One asks why it is therefore, still listed in the NAA’s RecordSearch in 2013?

Another example:

Although we will never know what the next dead end file referred to, file series A1533 control symbol 1955/4448 was titled “Discovery of Secret Naval Intelligence Memorandum.” Paul applied for a copy of the file and the NAA advised “Unfortunately the National Archives of Australia does not hold this item as it was withdrawn by the AFP.” (Presumably the Australian Federal Police.)

Again, why is the file still listed in RecordSearch if the file is not in the physical custody of the NAA?

Intriguing file title:

Another intriguing file title is file series P1566, control symbol Phenomena – Mawson – 1958, titled “Visual phenomena – Mawson – 1958 – sighted from Taylor,” currently held by the Hobart office of the NAA. Paul Dean had the file examined and digitised. Although not a classic UAP, it is a UAP in the broadest sense – and from the details on the file, a mystery to me even after reading the file. For interest sake, I will record basic details here.

At about 1300hrs (GMT+7) on 17 Jul 1958, four experienced observers saw “…an unusual display of lights and shadows” for about 20 minutes. The Sun was below the horizon and the sky almost clear of clouds. First came an “…indefinable blob of shadow  travelling …at great speed…” Then came “…a group of parallel rays” white in colour. A most unusual display.

Final note:

On a final note, file series K95 control symbol 1986/871, when first located by Paul, was titled “Aerial Phenomena – General (DCA-Transport.)” After Paul requested it to be examined, the NAA has now changed  the title to”Aerial Phenomena – UFOs (DCA-Transport.}” It is waiting to become available for us all to read.

Again, congratulations to Paul on his research initiative.

Hi all,

Welcome to this first post of 2013!

Introduction:

In early January of each year, I make a point to look at the National Archives of Australia’s (NAA) electronic database “RecordSearch.” From previous experience I have learnt that at this time of year, a check of RecordSearch often reveals newly available Australian Government UAP files. This year was no exception.

RecordSearch:

RecordSearch now has details of the following files which weren’t present in the database in December 2012.

1. File series A9755 control symbol 1. Formerly 5/6/4/Air Part 1.
File title is [RAAF Headquarters Operations Command] UAS {Unusual Aerial Sightings] policy [Project] Hessdalen [Norway sent to RAAF by GSW] [UFO Unidentified Flying Object]

7. M1148 Unidentified Flying Objects.
Unidentified Flying Objects [UFOs] [Includes correspondence and a report; the report is 'Department of Air; unusual aeriala sightings; summary 3; January 1970-December 1979; correspondents include Lieutenant-Colonel E H B Neill]
NYE
1970-1972
3145782.

Comments:

You will note that only one of these files has been examined/cleared for public viewing. The rest have a status of “Not Yet examined.”

I have therefore submitted requests to the NAA to have these files reviewed. This process can take up to several months. Following this process, the file status is changed to “open with exception” or “open.”

Requests can then be submitted for papers on the files which are more than 30 years old, to be digitised (at .50 per file.) There is, however, a catch as almost all of the papers on these files are less than 30 year old as at 2013, and will not be available to us until 30 years have passed. For example. papers dated 1994 will not be available until 2024 under the Archive Act. The one exception is file series M1148 which should be available in full.

A side note is that all of the A9755 series files mentioned previously, were sighted by this author and Dominic McNamara at RAAF Base Edinburgh during the Disclosure Australia Project. For part summaries of these files, see Project newsletters 14 and 15 (click here.)

Hi all,

One of the UAP files which the Disclosure Australia Project (2003-2008) located in the National Archives of Australia (NAA), belonged to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO.) Click here to read about the CSIRO’s role.

NAA file series A8520 control symbol HM1/30 was titled “CSIRO – General – UFOs.” 90 pages, with a date range of 1957-1968 were made available to the Project at that time.

A recent look at the digital version of this file reveals that someone has paid to have additional pages made available in digital format. There are now 130 pages available for this file, dated up to 1981. However, the new documents are almost exclusively pieces of correspondence between individual members of the public and the CSIRO. The CSIRO’s consistent response was that they did not research UAP and referred correspondents to the Department of Air, who held responsibility for investigating reports of UAP.

There are however, a couple of interesting items on the newly available pages:

1. A 20 foot diameter circle of ‘scorched’ grass was found in March 1969 at Kyogle, New South Wales. A toadstool from within the circle was examined by the Botanic gardens who suggested the ring might be of fungal origin. For further details click here.

2. A CSIRO employee privately examined a photograph taken in October 1972 at Lake Hume and pronounced it a double exposure.

For a lengthy research article on the CSIRO and and its involvement with UAP, by myself, please click here.
