UFO Sighting in Springfield, Oregon on April 7th 2014 – Saw it approach straight on, it flew directly over my car.

Written by Seraphin. Posted in UFO Sightings

It was 8:56 pm and had just become completely dark outside. I was driving home from my daughters house and heading south on 7th street. I had already observed 2 instances of lights disappearing and doing odd things earlier that night, so when I saw this light ahead, I thought “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
There’s a very small mountain range directly south of my position, maybe 2 miles away. There was a bright light just above the mountains that appeared to be stationary. It was white with a blue undertone; very bright and constant, with no pulsing or blinking. It looked just like a street light, only centered over the road. When I came to a stop sign, the light was elevating very slowly; or so I thought. It was just moving towards me and gave the illusion it was rising. Upon approach, It became obvious that there were in fact two lights of the same color; side by side. I would guess they were two lights on one vehicle. I came to the Main st. stop sign and watched. The lights passed directly over my car. Watching through the T-tops of my Trans Am, I then opened my door and stuck my head out. It was extremely quiet with only a wispy / static / electrical type hissing sound. It was subtle, and almost inaudible. It was then, that I could see a ring; a halo right dead center of the two lights. I was looking at the under-belly of this object. The ring was barely noticeable and not illuminated. It just looked grey in comparison to the night sky, and the bright white/blue lights flanking the ring. It passed over very slowly and deliberately. I got the sense this was close to the ground; closer than an airplane on approach anyway. I could see no outline of a craft, which makes me think the object was black.
A honk from the car behind me, had me shutting my door and driving on. It was about 3 minutes from the time I spotted the object until it flew directly over me and I drove away. Like I said, it seemed to be an active night as I’d seen other lights in the sky doing “Other than normal” things.

Black Triangle Sighting in Watervliet, Michigan on March 24th 2014 – Bright close revolving flashing light then approach

Written by Seraphin. Posted in UFO Sightings

I went on my balcony to smoke I saw bright flashing lights up in sky as it is a clear night. I watched for the duration of my cig then noticed a brief small4-6 quick movements. It then moved closer repidliyband I could see the triangular bottom. I then ran inside to report thi. Which I’m doing for the second time. I got curious and went to look again I seen the object farther in the distance but as though a plane of some sort was circling it. I heard a helicopter close but could not see one. Live next door to a hospital helicopters are common but thus one was quieter. I come back in and start typing this in much better detail the first time. Then think I’m going to take pics. I hear the helicopters now circling they get distant then circle again. So I grab my sons iPad in fear at this point. I start clicking away at the first and only object I had seen at the time. I look to my left in the lower sky there is an orange disc and it’s looking like it’s moving my direction. I quick hurry to take video but iPads said u- m fail or something. Never did that before. But I click the button a few more times and run in the house bc that thing was moving closer. I typed this so much better the first time so if you can look it up in your history you may find it. I don’t know but I’m a little weirded out and here’s the pics. Funny thing is I didn’t even see the other one and I had no clue what I was taking pictures of. Analyze them please and prove me wrong. I would love to know how to get radar info right now and the helicopters I can still hear them.

A novel approach to the Bougainville Reef case

Written by Seraphin. Posted in UFO's in the news

Hi all,

Cold case investigation:

Regular readers of this blog will be aware of my “cold case” investigation of the 28 May 1965, Bougainville Reef aircraft encounter (click here, here, and here.)  However, few people will have ever come across the version of the case, as described in the 2009 novel “UFOs: Food for Thought,” by Queensland author John Meskell.

In May 1965, Meskell was in the Queensland Police force, and was the original and only source, for the Bougainville Reef event (see June-Jul 1965 NICAP “UFO Investigator.”) It was therefore of great interest to me to be able to read how Meskell described the case in his novel.

The novel’s version:

Pages 24 and 25 of the novel contain a discussion between two characters “Barlow” and “Carter.”

“At 3.25am, May 27, 1965, a UFO paced an airliner for ten minutes over Bougainville Reef off North Queensland. I’m not sure of the exact date, and I’m now talking out of the top of my head, but I do remember the incident well. It was unofficially named the Bougainville Reef sighting. It’s all documented.

“That sounds interesting – did the Government actually know about it?”

“Oh yes, they knew about it alright,” Carter laughed. “I didn’t have anything to do with this one, but I do remember reading much of the correspondence relating to this incident.”

“What happened?”

“It’s an incredible story to say the least. The Federal Government went to great lengths in attempting to cover it all up, and really carried on like bloody amateurs. It was too large to suppress, with too many witnesses, and to this day I cannot believe why they didn’t come straight out and admit the facts, without going on with all the nonsense they embarked upon with their incompetent opinions.”

“Just to give you an indication of how vital the circumstances of this matter were, in 1967 Dr James McDonald, a professor in the Department of Meteorology from the University of Arizona in the United States, and senior physicist in the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, came to Australia to investigate this matter as well as other Australian sightings, including the Papua sighting I have already spoken about. He was without doubt, just about the top authority on this subject in the United States. Now, what about him for a person of impeccable credibility and unimpeachable character? Makes you think doesn’t it?”

“Okay, I’ll go along with that. What was the result of his trip to Australia?”

Carter sat up. He leaned forward and began to tap and bounce his pencil on the desk. “Bougainville Reef is about 260 kilometres east of Cooktown, and details of this sighting were not made available until the arrival of Professor McDonald from America. Anyhow this is what I became aware of. The Captain of a DC6 airliner, which I think was a DC6 chartered by TAA from Ansett, or vice versa, I’m not too sure now, but it was one or the other. The Captain described a ’round-shaped object’ flying parallel to them for ten to fifteen minutes, in a radio message to Air Traffic Control at Townsville. The radio message was tape recorded on flight control tapes at Townsville. At the time, a man named Bill Orr was the control officer. Other members of the plane crew sighted and witnessed this object, and each of them spoke, and was taped, to confirm what they were witnessing.”

“The Captain advised the Townsville control tower that he was taking photographs of the saucer, which continually buzzed his aircraft and letting off what the Captain thought to be red exhaust gases. Of course all of this conversation to the Townsville Air Traffic control officer was being recorded on tape.”

“Where was the DC6 travelling to?”

“From Sydney to Port Moresby. Looking back, I can now recall that when the pilot arrived back in Brisbane, he was immediately flown down here to Canberra, where he was quizzed as to what he had seen. Our Government authorities also seized the flight control tapes from the Townsville aerodrome with conversations about this incident. The Captain’s camera and films were also confiscated and the entire crew, after being questioned, were warned of a penalty of immediate dismissal if they spoke to anyone about this incident.”

“So what was the final outcome?”

“Well, things became a bit embarrassing for the Government when Professor McDonald arrived in Brisbane on the 9th of June 1967 to look into this matter, to say nothing of the media getting into the act with headlines such as “Why the secrecy?” Professor McDonald had been well informed, and from some source he and his investigators tracked down one of the retired air hostesses who had been a crew member that night. She confirmed without doubt what had occurred. There was another incident but it would take me too long to tell you all about it. You can read it all for yourself, and form your own opinion.”

Ufology – “One Way forward”: use the approach of science

Written by Seraphin. Posted in UFO's in the news

Debunking Skeptics (CSICOP & the Australian Skeptics for example) would do well to read Edward Ashpole‘s new book “Signatures of Life – Science searches the Universe”.  So would the UFO “true believers.”  For the benefit of the latter it is easily to acquire via Amazon even as an e-book on Kindle. Skeptics should find it even easier – it has been published by their favoured publishing House – Prometheus Books.

From the publishers:

Informative and fascinating, this book delves into the topic of extraterrestrial life in a thought-provoking yet scientifically responsible way. Are we alone in the universe, or is life a universal phenomenon? For fifty years, astronomers in SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) have scanned the universe for intelligent signals, but with no success. In this intriguing book, Edward Ashpole explains the probable reasons for this and discusses other avenues of investigation more in line with the nature of science and technology. The author examines the problems inherent in scanning the universe for radio or optical signals from an alien intelligence. These include the difficulty of trying to communicate with another species possessing a completely unknown form of technology and the vast distances that alien communications would have to travel to reach us. This leads the author to other ways of finding evidence for extraterrestrial life, given that advanced civilizations would probably use artificial intelligence for interstellar travel. Our scientists now know how to detect the presence of life on a planet by observing its spectral lines, so more advanced alien researchers would have had ample time (about two billion years) to investigate these “signatures of life” coming from Earth. Hence, the author argues, alien space probes could exist within our own solar system; there might be evidence on the erosion-free Moon or on another moon or planet. In fact, a few scientists have scanned NASA’s best photography, looking for evidence of such “alien archaeology.” In a final chapter, the author urges an open-minded attitude on the part of scientists to all credible sources of information, along with the use of the scientific method to test various hypotheses and weed out the fantasy factor, which so often interferes with serious attempts to find hard evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.

From the contents pages:
I found that the author referred to me in the book:
The endnote in the text:
The quote from me comes from my chapter on “Physical Traces” in the book “UFOs 1947-1987″ where I focused on the ground traces left in UFO landing events – Close Encounters of the 2nd kind in Dr. Allen Hynek’s UFO parlance:
The “witches” reference comes from my 1996 book “The OZ Files – the Australian UFO story.”  I elaborate:

In 1973, I was a third year Science student majoring in chemistry and mathematics at the University of New England.  I was also engaged in “forbidden science”.  It was not the first time.  Nor would it be the last.   I was experiencing some difficulties in analysing soil samples from a UFO landing site at Emerald Beach, near Woolgoolga, on the north coast of New South Wales.
A contact suggested I approach Dr. Keith Bigg, then Deputy Director of Radiophysics – CSIRO.  Dr. Bigg was helpful in his advice.  He was most intrigued about my descriptions of the Emerald Beach incident and the fact that “circles” had been found.  “Seems quite a classic case,” he wrote.   Dr. Bigg’s parting sanguine advice had an instructive twist to it.  “Never admit that your interest is in UFOs or you’ll get nowhere.  You’re more likely to get cooperation in hunting witches.  Think up a “scientific” reason…,” he wrote.   Dr. Bigg’s analytical advice was in the true spirit of science, a tribute to his own open mindedness, but his closing remarks were a sad reflection of the prevailing myopic view of mainstream science.  The English visionary, William Blake, referred to it as “Newton’s sleep.”

In my 2005 book “Hair of the Alien” I took the search for trace evidence into the more controversial area of alien abduction claims (see pages 6-7 of my book):

One of the great pioneers of scientific detection or forensic science was Dr Edmond Locard.  He is perhaps best remembered for the basic principle or idea behind the whole body of forensic science: every contact leaves a trace. While Locard clearly had in mind crime committed by human felons, the application of the principle in this very controversial area is of critical significance.[i] If alien abductions really occur in the manner described by thousands of people around the world, then at the very least a “crime” against the sovereignty of human kind is being perpetrated. Most of the claims of alien abduction describe situations that are clearly against the will of the individuals involved. Thus the “crime” interpretation and the forensic approach it inspires are well founded. Beyond the striking biological perspective there is a much broader and complex dimension to the forensic viewpoint. As in classic crime scene investigations the evidence for the reality of abduction claims can come from diverse avenues, such as the biological, physical, intuitive, and just plain commonsense.  There is also a cautionary element to forensic investigations; they require considerable care. Even while looking for the traces of alien “contact”, we must carefully examine the impact of the “contact” that comes with the intrusions of researchers, investigators and other participants into these bizarre situations. Their involvement can often give a less than satisfactory or reliable dimension to the more prosaic senses of “contact” with possible alien realities. Not every contact leaves a reliable trace.  Every aspect needs to be carefully considered. Beyond these cautionary elements, the idea of a “contact” resonates powerfully with the otherworldly implications of alien abduction experiences.

[i]For an interesting discussion of Locard’s principle see the prologue of Dr. Zakaria Erzinclioglu’s book “Every Contact leaves a trace”.

Edward Ashpole makes very important points in his book:

Debunking Skeptics and true believers would do well to read Edward Ashpole’s fascinating new book. It highlights the need for UFO research to focus on good science, something I have been advocating throughout my own journey through the extraordinary UFO mystery.  While Ashpole is providing a broad brush and in the process misses many scientific touchstones in ufology it is a great bridging work. However I suspect that those that really should read it – the debunking skeptics and the uncritical true believer may be very stubborn demographics if history is any measure.  The book is a call for a more sensible path beyond the dogmas and beliefs of both extremes.
