  The True Story…

Albert M. Chop, Air Force UFO Public Information Officer at the Pentagon 1951-53, was present in radar control at Washington National Airport during the July 1952 radar/pilot encounters.  He was also involved in the1956 United Artists documentary motion picture, “U.F.O.”, also known as “Unidentified Flying Objects: The True Story of Flying Saucers.”

Albert M. Chop, Deputy Public Affairs Officer, is shown at his console in the Mission Control Operations Room in the Manned Spacecraft Center (NASA), Houston, Texas during a Gemini-Titan 4 simulation on May 30, 1965.

Albert M. Chop was first a newspaper reporter in Dayton, Ohio. After World War II, Chop worked for the Press Section of the Air Material Command (AMC) at Wright-Patterson AFB.

After being promoted to Chief of the Press Section at AMC and having had the opportunity to talk to top government officials, who were convinced many “UFO sightings represented very real craft of unknown origin”, Al Chop was no longer skeptical of UFOs.

On the evening of July 26, 1952, Chop was present in the radar control room at Washington National Airport, when numerous UFOs were tracked on radar in restricted airspace. Jet interceptors were scrambled, and one of those jets almost had contact with one of the unknowns. The whole event was witnessed on radar and via radio transmission.

In 1956, “Project Sign” became the subject of a feature-length motion picture entitled “Unidentified Flying Objects: The True Story of Flying Saucers.”

Chop also worked for NASA.

Years later, an interview was conducted at Mr. Chop’s home in Palm Desert, California. He was 83 years old at the time.

Albert M. Chop passed in Palm Desert, California on January 15, 2006.
