There’s more where that came from! Not surprising, those same compelling brain-teasers have undoubtedly stumped millions of others including: scientists, poets, doctors, psychiatrists and all those in between…, from past to present! This is “WHY?” I wrote my book entitled…, “WHY?” “Questions and Answers from a Young Black Male, tellin’ it like it is!” My allegorical book is founded upon a barrage of oddity! This hodgepodge of peculiar “WHY?” questions seem to have no real nor definitive answers…, until now! I have successfully tackled 117 quirky conundrums with zeal, vigor and logic! The book is composed of 2 fervent chapters. Chapter 1 named “Potpourri”, entails a series of 76 quaint “WHY?” questions and answers that are a direct result of just being alive…, such as: “WHY?” do some people tap their feet and smack their food while they are eating?…, and poignant topics similar to: “WHY?” did the tragedy of 9/11 happen? Next, Chapter 2 dubbed “In Black and White”, depicts an assortment of 39 peculiar ‘WHY?” questions and answers that are linked to idiosyncratic mannerisms exhibited in contrast between Black people and White people…, examining: “WHY?” are so many Black males in prison?…, and “WHY?” are White people so obsessed with convertible cars and Honda automobiles? This is the second effort by a band that cites influences as varied as La Monte Young, Boredoms, Aphex Twin, Dmitry Shostakovich, and Can, not to mention Friedrich Nietzche and trees. (Actual trees, that is — not a band called Trees.) As one might reasonably expect, the music is a crazy and at times inspired pastiche of sounds and textures: “Medman” features sounds of gently shattering glass and the chattering of electronic jungle fauna over a grinding, off-kilter rhythmic loop; “Saltwater Trails” starts out with either a Jon Hassell-esque treated trumpet or an equally distorted human voice (it’s hard to say which), followed by spacious horror-movie atmospherics. “Shapeshifter” consists of tape manipulations and various grades of white and grey noise, and the title track ends the program with densely layered reverberations that ebb and flow like an early Steve Reich piece, followed by otherworldly howls, something that sounds like a UFO landing, and rattling chains — then suddenly everything smoothes out into a gentle ambience that changes colors and textures gradually for the remainder of the track’s 34-minute length; drums and submerged vocals emerge briefly at the very end. Like the rest of the album, it’s a deeply strange and oddly lovely listening experience. – $10.97
