My wife and I went to bed around 10:45 pm on Friday May 6th. We have a south facing window looking over the ridge to the East of our home. At 10:58 I spotted a quick flash of light coming from a Cloud partially illuminated by the glare from the City lights. As I watched another light in a circular shape flashed and moved quickly across the same cloud in the same area. I asked my wife to take a look and make sure I wasn’t crazy. I pointed to the area and immediatly another light of the same shape and size appeared and moved around through the cloud in an erratic manner. At one point there were at least four lights moving simutaniously through the cloud in several directions. The lights never left the shape of the cloud. They just moved around it very quickly and in erratic patterns. I am quite certain it was not lightning as there were not thunder clouds or sounds associated with the event, and it did not look like any other lightning event I have ever seen. The lights moved in what my wife described as a strobe light effect. They would come and go in several different directions and make circular patterns in the cloud. This lasted until 11:09 pm when they suddenly stopped. A few minutes later one light appeared to head east and there were no more flashes or objects. My first thought was someone was shining several beams of light into the cloud like you would see at a hollywood event but there were no beams coming from the ground and the lights moved in a kind of 3 dimensional pattern if that makes sense.

Not all that long ago, I found a report on the MUFON Symposium held in Denver, Colorado in 2010. The author reported on my presentation which was a tribute to Len Stringfield (seen here) and the pioneering work he had done on UFO crash/retrieval cases.

I pointed out that Len had opened the door for the rest of us, and a subset of the UFO field, that is crash/retrievals, was now something that was viewed with new interest and new respect. If not for Len’s work, we wouldn’t be looking at these cases simply because we had been “educated” by the destruction of the Aztec UFO Crash case and the information about the reliability of the two men who were at the heart of it.

In his landmark paper, Len began with what seemed, in 1978, to be a strong report given the source of the information. I confess that the fact the witness claimed to be a retired Air Force colonel colored my thinking about it. In fact, in A History of UFO Crashes, I gave the case high marks. Later, in Crash – When UFOs Fall from the Sky, I would reevaluate the case. I thought of it as taking it to the end, which, I believe Len would have wanted.

In his 1978 presentation in Ohio at the MUFON Symposium, Len reported:

In 1948, according to reports from hazy sources, a UFO with occupants numbering anywhere from one to sixteen, had crashed in a desert region of the southwest United States or Mexico and was retrieved by U.S. military authorities. But the reports never got beyond rumor because 1948 was the year when Frank Scully’s book unloaded an alleged hoax on the public about a crashed UFO in Aztec, New Mexico.

In the Fall of 1977 new word of a 1948 crash came to me from a well-informed military source. His information, however, was scanty. He had heard from other “inside” military sources that a metallic disc had crashed somewhere in a desert region. His only details indicated that the craft had suffered severe damage on impact and was retrieved by military units.

By coincidence, months later in 1977, I was to learn more about a crashed disc occurring in 1948. This came from researcher Todd Zechel, whom I had known since 1975 when he became Research Director of Ground Saucer Watch. Formerly with the National Security Agency, Zechel stated that an Air Force technician told him that his uncle, then a Provost Marshal at Carswell Air Force Base near Ft. Worth, Texas, had taken part in the recovery of the crashed UFO which was described as a metallic disc, 90 feet in diameter.

The crash occurred about 30 miles inside the Mexican border across from Laredo, Texas, and was recovered by U.S. troops after it was tracked on radar screens. The job assigned the Provost Marshal, now a retired colonel, was to cordon off the crash site.

The retired colonel [Provost Marshal], now living in Florida, was tracked down by Zechel. Among other facts revealed by the colonel was that one dead alien was found aboard the craft which was described as about 4 feet, 6 inches tall, completely hairless with hands that had no thumbs.

Zechel learned from his source that the troops involved in the retrieval were warned that if they said a word about the incident they would be the “sorriest people around”.

Continuing his investigation, Zechel pieced together other eyewitnesses to the 1948 event. In his statement, Zechel relates the following: “I traced another Air Force colonel, now retired in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He had seen the UFO in flight. He was flying an F-94 fighter out of Dias [in reality Dyess] Air Force Base in Texas and was over Albuquerque, New Mexico, when reports came of a UFO on the West Coast, flying over Washington State. Radars clocked its speed at 2,000 miles per hour.

It made a 90 – degree turn and flew east, over Texas. The colonel, then a captain pilot, actually saw it as it passed. Then suddenly it disappeared from radar screens. At Dias base, the radar operators plotted its course, and decided it had crashed some 30 miles across the Mexican border from Laredo. When the captain got back to base, he and a fellow pilot got into a small plane and took off over the border after the UFO. When they landed in the desert at the crash site, U.S. troops were there before them.

The craft was covered with a canopy, and the two pilots were not allowed to see it. They were then called to Washington, D.C. for debriefing and sworn to secrecy about the whole event.

Those are the basics of the case, and I selected this one, I say, not only because it was the first in his original paper, but because he had more to say about it later. And, I have found a great deal of information about the case in the last year or so. Some of you might have recognized the details as presented here, but are puzzled by the date.

In his The UFO Crash/Retrieval Syndrome published in January 1980, Len reported that a fellow named James Minton had told him about another fellow, named William Draeger who talked about a UFO crash in 1950.

Len wrote, “I knew the incident well, and that it had been disputed by some researchers, however, I had not pursued the case beyond having referred to the alleged crash in my pervious paper. At that time, I had used information related by Todd Zechel to the Midnight Globe (not exactly the most reliable of sources). Since, further research into the case by Zechel and others has revealed that not only the year of the incident was wrong, having changed from 1948 to 1950, but also the crash site was changed.”

He printed a letter from Draeger who said that he had learned more about the crash, including information from an unnamed high-ranking Mexican Army officer. Draeger said he talked to the general on the telephone who told him that he knew about the crash but he had no papers or documents to prove it. Draeger asked if the general would go on camera for an interview and the officer agreed. When they arrived at his home, however, the general denied any knowledge of the incident. On camera, the general said he knew nothing about the crash.

Since that time, I have learned that Zechel never bothered to “vet” the retired colonel he had found in Pennsylvania. Everyone, including Len, believed that Zechel had done that. When I attempted to verify the “colonel’s” credentials, all I could learn was that he had been a low ranking enlisted soldier who entered the service in December 1945 and was released from active duty in January 1947.

I have learned that the this colonel, the Pennsylvania man, was an officer in the Civil Air Patrol who has now changed the date of the crash to 1954, or 1955, or maybe 1957. He wasn’t flying F-94s out of Dyess because the F-94 didn’t exist as an operational fighter in 1948 and Dyess didn’t exist in 1948. He has made many changes to the original story as some of his “facts” were found to be inaccurate.

And, I found, in the forerunner to the MUFON UFO Journal, Skylook, an article from 1968 that gives us the original information that set Zechel on his quest, and which, I believe, would have tipped off Len to the believability of the sighting if he had known about it. According to that article:

Col. R. B. Willingham, CAP squadron commander, has had an avid interest in UFO’s for years, dating back to 1948 when he was leading a squadron of F-94 jets near the Mexican border in Texas and was advised by radio that three UFO’s “flying formation” were near. He picked them up on his plane radar and was informed one of the UFO’s had crashed a few miles away from him in Mexico. He went to the scene of the crash but was prevented by the Mexican authorities from making an investigation or coming any closer than 60 feet. From that vantage point the wreckage seemed to consist of “numerous pieces of metal polished on the outside, very rough on the inner sides.”

Len’s research here, then, provided some of the basics of the case and opened it up to the research of many others. When Len first reported the case in 1978, it seemed to be a very good one, especially because of the high rank claimed by the witness. Later, as I became interested in UFO crash/retrieval stories, I accepted it as well because an Air Force colonel had signed an affidavit about it. High-ranking military officers simply wouldn’t jeopardize their reputations by telling a story that was so incredible unless it was true. I knew of many witnesses who claimed high military rank who had not attained it but just claimed it, but I was also convinced that a real officer who had worked all his career to get to this high rank would not make up such a story. I believed then, as Len did, there was some truth to this. But it all hinged on that Air Force colonel. Without him, the tale took a nose dive.

As I have reported in the past, the man was not an Air Force officer, but a CAP officer. The difference is that CAP officers are volunteers in a civilian auxiliary of Air Force, but they are not Air Force officers. Those who have served in the Air Force or the CAP know the difference. This guy, Robert Willingham tried to blur the difference to make him into something that he wasn’t.

So now I have taken one of Len’s first reports, actually Abstract I from his 1978 MUFON presentation and followed the investigation to the end. We now have what I believe to be a solid answer for this case which is, simply, it didn’t happen. Len started this process by publishing his information about it and I ended it for him. I believe Len would appreciate what we all have learned about this case. He would appreciate that we could now close it.

But this was not a criticism of Len or his work. He used, in 1978, the best information available to him. In 1980, he added to our knowledge by reporting on the changes to the case which made him suspicious. It wasn’t until 2008, as I was preparing my book on UFO crashes, that I found, originally through the Internet, more data, and that I discovered no one had bothered to learn if Willingham was telling the truth about his military career. Len thought others had done it and I thought others had done it. It wasn’t until I asked those others what they knew that I learned that truth.

This case unraveled because of Len’s work. He raised the original suspicions about it. He was the one who supplied the information about the shifting date, and without Len, we would never have learned what we did.

In that article I saw, it seemed to suggest that I was criticizing Len, but such was not the case. He was a valuable member of the UFO research community, and would have published the latest and best information the moment he had it. Len’s work and legacy can’t be ignored. He was a true pioneer, a true researcher, and the UFO community is much poorer with him gone.

My boyfriend and I WERE DRIVEING HOME WESTBOUND ON K-32 with my 3 kids sleeping in the back. We had just left the drive-inn after seeing the Battle L.A. movie,so when my boyfriend asked me “what is that” while pointing up I thought he was playing around, cuz I joke about seeing them all the time.He was’nt lieing this time, cuz I looked up and seen whatever it was.It sorta looked like a blimp with a airplane fin thing on the backpointing up and was square onthe bottom of it. I thought it might be an aircraft from the army base in leavenworth, the kind where each wing has twoengines on them,saw one wekks before. He said it might be birds but it never changed shape while it moved in the air, kinda looked like it was hovering and SLOWLY moving. I did not have ONE LIGT OF ANY COLOR. it was dark on top and had light square looking shapes on the underside, but no lights. Plus, it was suuper foggy and a plane would have needed them, it was way to foggy/cloudy. It also seemed t be very low. Dont know what it was but it is something i have never seen before.

I am a videographer and just got done filming a wedding. I let my dog outside and since it was a really nice night…I figured I would watch the skies for a few minutes…hoping to see this same UFO I have seen on several occasions…just felt the urge to go out there…so I went out there with her. Out of nowhere…right in the clear sky…close enough AGAIN to me…to actually startle someone…a very, very bright white orb flew right by me…very low…if conventional…it was easily close enough to hear something, but as always…IT WAS COMPLETELY SILENT…NOT EVEN WIND RESISTANCE…AND NOT A SATELLITE BECAUSE TOWARDS THE SOUTH THERE WAS A LINE OF CLOUDS AND IT WAS CLEARLY BELOW CLOUD LEVEL…as it started to make a sweeping turn. It was moving SOUTHWEST…right towards O’Hare Airport…so I am sure if modern radar picks these things up when I see them…they are aware that something was in the sky EVERY SINGLE TIME I REPORTED (See Illinois database), I have never seen the object go in that exact direction…and it was without question…(no radar gun on it, but it appeared to be moving faster than I have ever seen before…but not as fast as a shooting star. The orb suddenly started a long sweeping turn…AND AS IT MADE THAT SWEEPING TURN…IT BEGAN FLASHING LIKE A STROBE LIGHT.

WHETHER PRIVATE EXPERIMENTAL…MILITARY EXPERIMENTAL…I will give you that possibility…as long as you give me it is possible this craft was not of this earth…but whatever it was…WAS UNDER INTELLIGENT CONTROL. IT WAS NOT MOVING IN A STRAIGHT LINE…IT WAS NOT WAY ABOVE THE CLOUDS…IT WAS NOT A PLANE…AND IT WAS AS BRIGHT AS THE SUN. I ran inside to grab my cameras, but could not get a good shot of it…but at least I saw it…and I have promised everyone that I WILL GET SERIOUSLY CLOSE UP FOOTAGE THIS SUMMER. I am mad I did not have my camcorders out there…but I am also encouraged that ONCE AGAIN…IT CAME BACK LIKE I PREDICTED IT WOULD AND IT CAME SERIOUSLY CLOSE TO ME AGAIN…THIS SUMMER…AT ONE POINT…I WILL BE READY AND GET THIS THING ON FILM AGAIN. SEARCH YOU TUBE FOR UFO IN HD if you wanted to see video of the object 2 miles away…but zoomed in. It will be on page 7 of your You Tube search.

Satellites do not hover…they do not travel at low altitudes…they do not make turns…they do not shoot up into the stars…they do not shoot beams down at you…after careful consideration after all these experiences…I lean towards exotic experimental aircraft (military or private) and or it is NOT OF THIS EARTH. Not a ball of lightning, not a meteor, not the ISS, not accelerated imagination, hallucinogenic drugs or alcohol, either. Once you see it…anyone reading this will agree that it is NOT LIKE ANYTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE SKY IN YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. IT IS SO LOW AND SO BRIGHT…BUT YOU HAVE TO BE LOOKING IN THAT DIRECTION AND GET LUCKY…BUT IF YOU JUST LOOK UP EVERY NOW AND THEN…YOU WILL EVENTUALLY SEE WHAT I AM SEEING AND IT IS WORTH THE WAIT…TRUST ME ON THIS…YOUR HEART WILL PUMP LIKE CRAZY…IT IS A VERY EXCITING FEELING TO SEE IT. IT IS AROUND…THIS SIGHTING WAS LATE, BUT I HAVE WATCHED INDIANA, ILLINOIS, MICHIGAN, OHIO AND WISCONSIN ON MUFON AND WITHOUT QUESTION…PEOPLE HAVE SEEN THIS SAME EXACT OBJECT IN THE MIDWEST.

THIS THING IS AN AWESOME SIGHT AND RIGHT AWAY…IT IS EASY TO SEE IT IS NOT A PLANE OR HELICOPTER OR SATELLITE OR BALL OF LIGHTNING…IT WILL EVENTUALLY SHOW YOU THAT IT IS NOT ONE OF THOSE THINGS AND THAT IS THE BEST PART…IT SEEMS TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT EACH TIME.

Last night…reconfirmed my gut feelings I have said MONTHS AGO…that #1…I will see this object again…#2…it will come close to me again…and #3…I will get close up footage. Well…#3 will come later this summer and I am disappointed I did not have the cameras out with me…BUT WHEN YOU SEE ONE FOR THE FIRST TIME…TRUST ME ON THIS…SEEING IS BELIEVING FOR YOU…SO BECAUSE IT IS SO RARE…JUST BE HAPPY TO HAVE SEEN IT…EACH SIGHTING USUALLY LAST ONLY A FEW SECONDS. Even if I had my camera…it would take a couple seconds to get it out of my camera bag…and turn it on. So this summer…I am taking 3 camcorders out with me…all on tripods…RECORDING as I sit out there…because when I go out there…they show up and it freaks me out too, trust me. I HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN ONE UFO IN MY ENTIRE LIFE FOR 40 YEARS. I would read stories and just be dying to see just one for a few seconds. I wrote a screenplay all about Dulce, New Mexico and when that script was complete IS EXACTLY when I saw my first one. I am disappointed I did not get good proof this time, but at least I got to see it again and I am seriously encouraged that this summer I WILL GET THE CLOSE UP FOOTAGE THAT I PROMISED. I swear I wish Stanton Friedman and James Fox could just sit with me…because I can show it to them, but I cannot promise to deliver it to you on one specific night…everyone has to patient. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Last night…I did not even have to wait long at all, but I have waited for a while to see it some nights. I know that sounds NUTS, but once you see it…YOU WILL WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN…hoping JUST ONE MORE TIME…FOR A FEW SECONDS. It is always the most awesome sight imaginable…better than the thrill of a meteor or comet because it is not just a flash…it is a bit slower. That mercury ball foo – fighter theory in WWII…FROM THOSE DESCRIPTIONS…this is exactly what I have seen and experienced.

I am in Park Ridge. I have said this many times…THE WAY TO SEE A UFO IS TO SERIOUSLY GO OUTSIDE ON A NICE SUMMER NIGHT AND YOU HAVE TO PATIENTLY WATCH THE SKIES. YOU WILL SEE IT FOR SURE IF YOU SIT OUT FROM 8:30 PM TO 11:30 PM IN THE CHICAGO AREA. Many of my reports had multiple sightings and the same exact descriptions…same exact times…same exact directions. If you put in just a little bit of time and star gaze…you will see your first UFO. Every single time you are outside this summer…TAKE A LOOK. It happens so fast…you will see how hard it is…to get it filmed…and that is frustrating…BUT YOU WILL JUST BE HAPPY TO SEE IT FOR A FEW SECONDS…IT IS AMAZING AND IT IS SO DIFFERENT FROM ANYTHING I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. I feel like it is not of this earth, but I cannot PROVE WHO is driving this thing. I also have the feeling that on several occasions whatever was up there WANTED me to see it. I never saw it start flashing before last night…that was a first. The last few times I saw it…ended the argument that what I was seeing was a satellite reflecting light towards the earth. That is not what I have seen. It is so low and so bright…IT IS UNMISTAKABLE. I hope one person sees this…follows my advice and you get to see this awesome white orb…it is big…it is clear as day…it is silent…it may stop…lower altitudes and hover right over you…it even put a beam down upon my face once. It got so close that time…that I ran back inside. When it was that close (above 100 feet above the power lines), YOU COULD SEE STRUCTURE AND BLACK FRAMING AND MORE DETAILS…LIKE SOME TYPE OF COCKPIT…AROUND WHAT LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE AN ELECTROMAGNETIC GLOW…BLACK CURVED FRAMING AROUND A BALL OF LIGHTNING. BUT BEFORE YOU CAST ME ASIDE…BALLS OF LIGHTING DO NOT TURN, HOVER, FLASH, SHINE A BEAM OF LIGHT DOWN AND/OR SHOOT INTO THE STARS LIKE THE FASTEST ROCKET EVER CREATED. Someone is in this structured silent craft, but who is it? Is it human or not human is what you will say out loud or think when YOU see it…and if you put in just a little effort…in this area of the country…YOU WILL SEE IT I CAN PROMISE YOU THAT…YOU WILL SEE IT AND AGREE WITH EVERY SINGLE WORD OF THIS RAMBLING NOVEL. This summer…close up footage to come and I am more sure of that NOW because it was back last night. I was thinking I might never see it again, but I just had a gut feeling I will continue to see it…it will continue to get close and THIS SUMMER BY GOD…I WILL GET THE FOOTAGE TO PROVE IT. It happens so quick it is hard to catch it…you will eventually see what I mean. YOU HAVE NO TIME TO RUN IN AND GET THE CAMERA STARTED…ETC. So…this summer…I am just going to record in 3 different directions towards the sky…and let them run for HOURS. If I am out there…this thing seems to show up over and over and over again…but no one really cares, no one really listens and no one really puts in any effort to investigate or put the effort into seeing it FOR THEMSELVES. At times…like last night…it is frustrating, but other times…I am feeling like…why should I bother to prove it and force people to believe me? Well…I am a nice guy and I wanted to share the experience. I have photos too and multiple witnesses from my neighborhood and multiple reports to MUFON where I went above and beyond to describe in full detail and provided video and photos to them…and nothing has been done. If someone spent some time with ME…they would be able to see it.

If people are serious about the study of UFO’s…all you have to do is LOOK UP INTO THE SKIES…IN THE MIDWEST…IF YOU SPEND THE TIME TO JUST LOOK UP AT NIGHT…YOU WILL SEE IT FOR SURE AND SEE THAT EVERY WORD I SAID ON THIS RANT IS 100% TRUE. I AM NOT SURE A SKEPTIC WOULD BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN THIS AWAY…BUT THEY HAVE TO PUT THE EFFORT INTO SEEING IT INSTEAD OF JUST DISCOUNTING MY REPORT WITHOUT SEEING THE SAME EXACT UFO IN PERSON THEMSELVES. Put in the effort. See it. Experience it. Then and only then can you pass judgements. Photographic and Video evidence…even in HD…is hard to match YOUR OWN EYESIGHT. The only way a skeptic can prove me WRONG is if they have the same exact sighting of the same object at the same time. THEY WOULD HAVE TO AGREE THAT WHATEVER IT IS…IT IS UNDER INTELLIGENT CONTROL AND THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CLEARLY DISPLAYED. WHEN YOU SEE IT…YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN…IT GIVES OFF AN OTHER-WORLDLY FEELING AND IN SOME WAYS…BECAUSE IT IS SILENT…IT IS SO SPOOKY TOO. YOU WILL SEE WHAT I MEAN WHEN YOU SEE IT…THOSE OF YOU THAT PUT IN THE EFFORT WILL SEE IT.
