Der erste moderne Fall dieser Art, der Aufsehen erregte, betraf das US-amerikanische Ehepaar Betty und Barney Hill, die im Jahr 1961 angaben, ein UFO gesichtet zu haben. Nachdem Betty monatelang unter Albträumen litt, die den Aufenthalt an Bord eines außerirdischen Raumschiffs betrafen, wurden sie und ihr Ehemann mittels Hypnose behandelt, wobei Barney Hill dann ähnliche Erfahrungen schilderte wie seine Frau. Ein ähnliches Erlebnis hatte in den 70er Jahren Travis Walton, der sich wiederholt Tests an einem Lügendetektor unterzog. Es ist außerordentlich schwierig, gesicherte Zahlen zu erhalten, aber mittlerweile sind es wohl Tausende von Menschen, die behaupten, sie seien durch Außerirdische verschleppt und in deren Raumschiffen verschiedenen medizinischen Experimenten unterworfen worden. 1992 veröffentlichte das amerikanische Meinungsforschungsinstitut Roper eine Umfrage, nach der 3,7 Millionen Amerikaner Opfer einer Entführung gewesen seien. Die Validität dieser Untersuchung und ihrer Ergebnisse wurde mehrfach angezweifelt. Unabhängig von der Frage, wie der Realitätsgehalt der Entführungserlebnisse aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht einzuschätzen ist, bleibt der Sachverhalt bestehen, dass Tausende von Betroffenen nach erfolgter ‚Wiedererinnerung subjektiv von der Realität der Entführungen überzeugt sind, ihre Biographien und Familiengeschichten entsprechend zu re-konstruieren beginnen und sowohl ihr Alltagsleben als auch ihre Zukunftsplanung an dieser Überzeugung ausrichten…

Out of the Blue, which first aired on the Sci-Fi Channel, is an excellent, sound, and sober documentary that ends up being as much about the cover-up as the UFO phenomenon itself, which is only to be expected since the two cannot be separated until the dark veil of truth is finally torn asunder. While you can’t even begin to examine more than a few of the most compelling UFO cases in such a short amount of time, the video does offer a good overview of the history of UFO activity and highlights a select number of important sightings and events from various parts of the world. A vast array of experts (scientists, astronauts, cosmonauts, physicists, pilots, military officers, government officials) are consulted, and many competent witnesses describe what they saw or experienced. Roswell, Rendlesham Forest, the 1976 Iranian air force encounter, and the more recent Phoenix Lights are all mentioned, but the scientific rigor of the presentation precludes any mention of more sensational topics such as alien abduction. Among the most significant (but less famous) events touched upon are Gordon Cooper’s filming of a craft landing and taking off from a California military base in 1955 (the film disappeared after it got to DC), footage of a Trident missile being blown apart by laser-beam-like weapons from a UFO, and the disabling of 10-20 nuclear missiles in Montana missile silos by a UFO which hovered over the base in broad daylight.

Go to the limits of human experience…and beyond. From the fringes of the galaxy to our own backyards, the UFO FILES searches for evidence of life beyond our world. Tracing the long, convoluted history of UFO encounters and research, this unique series opens new windows into the controversial field. What came down in the forest outside the sleepy hamlet of Kecksburg, Pennsylvania on December 9, 1965? Some residents claimed to see an acorn-shaped metal object with strange, hieroglyphic writing on its side, half-buried on the forest floor. Astronomer Von Del Chamberlain wrote that the Kecksburg object was a meteorite. NASA consultant James Oberg theorized that it was a failed Russian probe, but now also thinks it was probably a meteorite. Often called the “Pennsylvania Roswell” in UFO circles, the debate raged until, in late December 2003, NASA finally released 39 pages of material and the Air Force released 2800 pages on the case from its files. The only thing the government documents conclusively prove is that the object was not a Russian probe. But for UFO enthusiasts and researchers, many questions remain unanswered.
